Beginning a career as an electrician can feel overwhelming, but with the right mindset and advice, you can set yourself up for long-term success. In this blog, we’ll share some helpful tips for new electricians based on the experiences of one of our EV installers. His journey through the industry is an inspiring example of how perseverance, learning, and listening can make all the difference.
Our EV installer shares his personal story and helpful advice for those starting their careers as electricians. Watch the video below for more insights:
For many new electricians, the first step is completing an electrical installation course, much like our installer did in 2018. For him, attending college not only provided essential skills, but also introduced him to peers who would become lifelong friends—and even future colleagues.
"I made a lot of friends in the first year of me being there... two of them work for the company as well."
If you’re thinking about becoming an electrician, consider enrolling in a formal course to gain a strong foundation. Building a network during this time can be just as valuable as the technical skills you’ll learn, opening doors for job opportunities down the road.
After completing his course, our installer took a few detours before finding his place in the electrical industry. It’s important to remember that everyone's path is different, and the real learning often happens on the job. For him, joining Plug In Stations was the turning point.
"Since I've been working here, it's been chill. I've gained a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge."
Whether you jump straight into the field or take time to explore other areas, keep in mind that hands-on experience is key. Working alongside seasoned electricians allows you to pick up new techniques and gain practical knowledge that you won’t necessarily get in the classroom.
One of the standout tips from the video is the importance of learning from those around you. Whether you’re working with a senior electrician or a colleague with a different way of doing things, every interaction can be a learning opportunity.
"You will always learn no matter who you work with, especially with our company. A lot of people have different ways of working, and you learn things from everyone."
The key is to listen—take in as much advice as you can, and adapt those lessons to fit your own style. Over time, you’ll build up the confidence to make decisions independently, knowing you’ve learned from the best.
The electrical industry requires persistence. Our installer’s advice to new electricians is simple but important: stick to it, even when things feel tough or uncertain. The skills you develop, the knowledge you gain, and the experience you collect will eventually lead to more opportunities and confidence in your work.
"Just work, carry on working, gain experience from whoever you're working with, and eventually you'll be able to work on your own."
Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel like an expert right away. Every day you’re on the job is another chance to improve. Over time, you’ll see how much progress you’ve made.
If you're just starting out, the best thing you can do is to listen and observe. Every electrician has their own way of approaching a task, and by observing different techniques, you’ll learn which methods work best for you.
"Just listen to everyone, take their advice, use it if you want to... if you find a better way, then try and teach other people."
By staying open to learning, you’ll grow faster and become a better electrician. And who knows? One day, you’ll be the one passing on your knowledge to the next generation of electricians.
Whether you're fresh out of college or looking to shift careers, becoming an electrician can offer a rewarding and stable future. The key to success is to keep learning, stay open to advice, and persist through the challenges.
