What You Need to Know About LEZ

What Are Low Emission Zones (LEZ)?

Low Emission Zones (LEZ) are designated areas in towns and cities where vehicles that do not meet specific emissions standards are restricted or fined. These zones aim to improve air quality by reducing pollution from high-emission vehicles.

For businesses and homeowners considering EV charging solutions, understanding LEZs is essential. With the UK government pushing towards Net Zero by 2050, more cities are implementing these zones, making electric vehicles (EVs) and home or workplace charging a smarter investment than ever.

Where Are the Low Emission Zones in the UK?

LEZs are already active in several UK cities, and new locations are being considered as part of clean air strategies. These zones are currently in place in:

England:

  • London
  • Birmingham
  • Bath
  • Bradford
  • Bristol
  • Portsmouth
  • Oxford
  • Sheffield
  • Newcastle
  • Gateshead
  • Greater Manchester (planned)

Scotland:

  • Glasgow
  • Edinburgh
  • Dundee
  • Aberdeen

Each city has its own rules, enforcement dates, and penalties for non-compliance. If you live or operate a business in these cities, ensuring your vehicle meets emission standards can save you from costly fines.

How Does LEZ Charging Work?

LEZs use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to track vehicles entering the zone. If a vehicle does not meet the emission standards, the owner receives a fine, known as a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

  • In Scotland, the standard fine for a non-compliant vehicle is £60, which doubles daily if the vehicle remains within the zone. The charges are capped at:
    • £480 for cars and light goods vehicles
    • £960 for HGVs, buses, and coaches
  • In London, the LEZ is separate from the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and mainly affects heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and commercial diesel vehicles.

What Vehicles Are LEZ Compliant?

LEZ Compliant Vehicles:

  • Petrol cars – Euro 4 (registered after January 2006)
  • Diesel cars – Euro 6 (registered after September 2015)
  • Hybrid petrol cars – Euro 4 (registered after January 2006)
  • Hybrid diesel cars – Euro 6 (registered after September 2015)
  • Electric vehicles – All EVs are automatically LEZ compliant
  • HGVs, buses & coaches – Euro VI standard

For homeowners and businesses, this means switching to an electric vehicle or ensuring your fleet is compliant can save significant money in the long run.

How LEZs Impact Businesses and Homeowners

For Businesses:

  • Fleet Compliance – If your business relies on vans or company cars, ensuring they are LEZ-compliant avoids daily fines.
  • Cost Savings – Switching to electric vehicles reduces long-term fuel and maintenance costs.
  • Sustainability & Reputation – Customers are more likely to choose businesses that demonstrate eco-conscious operations.
  • Workplace Charging – Installing EV chargers at your business premises makes it easier for employees and customers to transition to electric vehicles.

For Homeowners:

  • Avoid Charges – If you live in an LEZ, switching to an EV means you won’t have to worry about daily fines.
  • Increased Property Value – Homes with EV chargers are becoming more attractive to buyers.
  • Government Grants – There are incentives available to help with the cost of installing a home EV charger.

"As more Low Emission Zones appear, having an EV and a reliable charger at home or at work is becoming a necessity, not just a luxury." – Plug In Stations UK

How to Prepare for LEZ Changes

  • Check Your Vehicle – Use online tools to see if your car is LEZ compliant.
  • Upgrade If Necessary – If you drive frequently within an LEZ, consider switching to an electric vehicle.
  • Install an EV Charger – Whether at home or work, having a charger makes the transition smoother and more cost-effective.
  • Stay Informed – LEZ rules are expanding – keeping up to date ensures you don’t get caught out by new charges.
